Location
700 km from Windhoek and 110 km from the South
African border at Ariamsvlei due east, the town
of Karasburg is essentially an agricultural centre
for stock farmers in this semi-arid southern part
of the region. The town has most major facilities,
including 24-hour garages; stores, a well-appointed
airstrip and major national trail links to the
border and north - supported by a number of hospitality
establishments.
The
area is a favourite for motoring and safari enthusiasts,
with the well-known Karas Mountain 4x4 operation
near the town offering well organised, guided
4x4 excursions, hunting, camping and off-road
adventures across a number of game farms and homesteads
in the area.
Just south west of the town is the historic settlement
of Warmbad (Warm Bath), which has been a centre
for missionaries bold enough to brave its rugged
climate and often warring local inhabitants, who
were originally attracted to the area by its thermal
springs, which are presently being harnessed as
part of a new tourism resort.
Home to a tribal clans forced into the region
from South Africa in the 1800’s (principal among
which were the Bondelswarts Nama and Herero Oorlams),
land disputes, tribal allegiances, bitter wars
and rebellions with colonials in the area saw
Warmbad’s original mission post, begun by two
German brothers in 1806, destroyed in 1834 and
restored again by Wesleyan missionaries in 1866.
Resorts
Some
150km from the popular resorts of the Fish River
Canyon, and linked by road hamlets (like Grünau,
that has 3 resorts in the area) accommodations
in Karasburg include B&B’s such as Jeanne’s,
Hoon’s, Kalkfontein and Pela Pela Backpackers,
while the well-known Klein Begin Game Lodge provides
more luxury facilities in a farm setting known
for its exciting night-time game drives.
Karas Mountain 4 x 4 in the heart of the Karas
Mountains, north of the town, offers a variety
of close-to-earth farm holidays as well as exceptional
veld camping in wild and unspoilt surroundings.
Activities
Aside from a visit to the new Warmbad Spa Resort
(due to open in 2006) farm type activities and
camping are popular for the traveller with more
time to spare. Wildlife on many farms is abundant,
showcasing some of the region’s original animal
species such as Aardwolf, Lynx, Bat-eared Fox
plus a large variety of birdlife and antelope
like Kudu, Gemsbok and Springbok.
Karas Mountain 4 x 4 is ideal for the active,
outgoing tourist who can even receive on-the-spot
expert 4 x 4 vehicle training. Hunting of antelope
is favoured by some visitors and is well catered
for, with game trophies prepared by the company
into game biltong (meat jerky) and prepared skins.
Hunting in the area is strictly controlled and
monitored by bona fide regulatory bodies.
